Most of the evacuee women will be able to qualify for WIC and Texas WIC can
give them a manual pump, if appropriate. That is if they end up here in
Texas. From what I see of the living quarters in the large shelters, there
is no privacy. There also looks like no way to properly wash and sterilize
bottles or fix formula. Both the Harris County and City of Houston WICs are
proactive in promoting breastfeeding with PCs and IBCLCs. So far, I have not
had any referrals for any hurricane evacuees needing BF help-- although all
the local WICs here have been extending hours to serve LA clients and
relaxing the need for documentation. I understand that Houston area IBCLCs
have taken BF information to the Astrodome and an IBCLC was there on Friday
in the triage area. I have not heard that there has been much need of BF
help. So hang on to those pumps and we'll see what women need. Perhaps other
states that do not have pumps through WIC could use them?

Best to you all, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC (Houston, TX)

PS: I am very impressed by how Harris County and City of Houston are
handling the evacuee situation. They are organized. For example, my church
denomination has been asked to serve food on a certain day and we were asked
to raise $1,000,000 (yes, one million dollars!!!) to pay for the food for
the week we are responsible for feeding people at the big dome shelters
here. I work for Harris County and last summer we had a drill on emergency
operations with everyone having to do the mandatory training. My church is
working to help another church feed and clothe and find jobs for 300 people
in Seabrook. Everywhere you go here, people are very sad looking. Locals and
the Louisiana people. And these are the people who drove out early, not the
ones who got stuck there in the flooding.
