Laura asks,

<<How does everyone else justify paying for CERPs and recertification and
does anyone just choose to re-take the exam at 5 years?>>

Laura, I'll be taking the exam for the 5th time next year -- my 25th year
of being an IBCLC. I recertified by CERPS one time -- at my 5 year mark in
1992. I've recertified by exam every other time. You are right -- it is
much less expensive. However, I do attend conferences (and speak at
conferences) -- I just can't be bothered to keep track of all the CERP stuff.
Much easier to take the exam and see where I need to continue to improve (not
to mention I like to "help" IBLCE by commenting on really bad questions in
the exam....sounds as though I would have really had a field day with this
year's exam, but that's another post....

The important thing is, you need to keep up to date on lactation issues.
I think Lactnet is a fabulous resource, and you get tons of information
here....and there are webinars you can attend, and other things you can do.
Personally, I would encourage everyone to recertify by exam, but ALSO keep
up with the literature, webinars, attending conferences when you can -- then
you don't have to fuss about the number of CERPs....but you are still
keeping up.
