Whales and dolphins are very interesting, the baby does not actually
latch. The baby bumps the mother's breast area with his head, lines up
with the breast slit, and the mother squirts her milk into the water for
the baby to drink. The baby is close to mom but not attached, so the
milk doesn't get very diluted by the water. Cetacean milk is also high
in fat, both because the baby needs to put down blubber to protect it
from the cold water and so it doesn't disperse much in the water.

Catherine Watson Genna, BS, IBCLC cwgenna.com ~ who spent many an
hour as a young mom watching the baby beluga whales bf at the Coney
Island Aquarium. It was one of my kids favorite places to go.
