Fiona, thank you so much for sending the 10 steps for Physicians from the
South African Medical Journal. These seem just the teensiest bit negative
though, do others feel this way? A little re-phrasing of the first 5 steps
could turn this around into something that doctors might be proud to hang on
their walls:-

1. adopt up-to-date guidelines relating to breastfeeding practice;
2. promote the premise that breastfeeding is a healthier option than
hygienic bottle-feeding;
3. allow the breastfed baby unlimited access to the breast without
restrictions on the duration or frequency of feeds;
4. encourage breastfeeding rather than the use of bottles or pacifiers in
breastfed infants;
5. support the WHO Code by not giving free milk powder samples to mothers or
accepting gifts/funding from formula-manufacturers;
6. actively encourage women to breastfeed their babies;
7. know how to help a mother to position her baby correctly at the breast;
8. be able to identify and treat early breastfeeding problems;
9. provide continuity and personal support based on sound knowledge of
breastfeeding;
10. form part of a larger network incorporating breastfeeding support
groups, clinics and anyperson/organisation involved with the promotion and
support of
breastfeeding;
11. continually update their knowledge about benefits of breastfeeding and
advances in breastfeeding management and practices.

Feel free to change/amend this to make it sound even better! I would like
to present the "baby-friendly" doctors of my acquaintance with a copy, as a
thank you for their breastfeeding-promotion efforts.
