Yay, Jennifer, the Dr. Kliot you mentioned in your reference delivered my
[20 year old] son. He still maintains a practice here in Brooklyn, NY,
although he has a midwife team doing most of the deliveries. His son is
now in the practice with him! My son was delivered "a la Leboyer", Dr.
Kliot was one of the first to really believe in and practice so called
natural childbirth. As the baby was crowning, Dr. Kliot pointed out how
wonderful the birth process is to the resident. My hubby got to bathe our
son right after the delivery, which is what we did back then "a la
Leboyer", but Idid get to nurse first right on the delivery table. Wow,
what an innovation back in 1977! The cord was not clamped right away, but
out of my three sons, only the one whose cord was cut immediately (nuccal
cord) was NOT jaundiced. Hm.
Back to Dr. Kliot for a moment, he actually wheeled me to the telephone
in my hosp. bed in the so called recovery room to telephone my mom.
When the line was busy, he wheeled me back again so I could call! And
finally, Dr. Kliot was honored by our local neighborhood development corp
this spring.
When I teach my prenatal breastfeeding class, I like to take credit where
credit is due-I tell the moms that back in the seventies, we hippies got
hospitals to change their practices if they wanted our (repeat) business.
Lets hope that we can continue to change practices....Keep up the good
fight....
