Martek takes on more of infant formula market with Arla

28/03/2007 - Martek Biosciences Corporation is taking its omega fatty acids
DHA and ARA to the European infant formula market, with the signing of a
multi-year license and supply agreement with Arla Foods.
The Colombia, Maryland-based company claims its blend of DHA and ARA is
present in more than 85 percent of infant formula sold in the United States.
Arla Foods was formed in 2000 by the merger of Danish MD Foods and Swedish
Arla, and is one of Europe's largest dairy companies.
The diary giant has subsidiaries in 19 export markets. As such the license
and supply agreement will bolster Martek's distribution and points to the
market opportunities for infant formula manufacturers to use omega
ingredients.
"This agreement with Arla Foods is yet another example of how large global
companies are recognizing the benefits of adding Martek oils to formula,
both for their business and the infants they serve," said Martek CEO Steve
Dubin.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA(arachidonic acid) are found in human
breast milk and are important to infant development.
Martek differentiates itself from competitors in the fish oil category of
omega ingredients, by producing DHA and ARA from vegetarian sources.
The company claims its branded ingredient, Life'sDHA, is made from farmed
microalgae that is free of the contaminants that may be present in certain
fish. Life'sDHA is made from algae grown in stainless steel fermentors
under tightly controlled manufacturing conditions.
