I can see this discussion heading down hill :-(

As LCs we need to be sensitive to lots of different cultural expectations and parental expectations.
I think the situation was handled correctly in that the LC recognized the baby was turning the corner.  Close follow-up to see that the baby progressed in the next 12-24 hours was certainly needed because baby could have just as easily crashed..
  
Coming from my background (HCP) I would have probably wanted to see how dry this baby really was(CBC/diff and electrolytes), but I for sure would have wanted to see lots more stooling in first 24-48 hours.  This baby may have been in more trouble than you realized.  

Child protective services would only need to be called if parents refused to take action if the baby continued to crash.

Creavat: I've been at home deliveries, I've even delivered babies at home when dr didn't get there in time.  I respect parents choices about many things.  I personally didn't depend on herd immunity to protect my babies from immunizable illnesses, but lots of my friends do and they are still my friends and I respect their choices.
