Hi all,

Requesting any specifc info on Proton Inhibitors such as Prilosec and a new
one I think Protonix _ unusre of spelling? - I am posting this second hand.
This past weekend (and for the second time in 3 weeks) a post-partum nursing
mother was ordered a med in this classification when she was admitted for
abdominal pain. Our neonatologists looked up info on "proton inhibitors" and
stated they they are known to cause fatal neonatal arrythmias and are not
safe to use in babies. I could find no specific info in HALE 2000 regarding
this and he lists Prilosec as an L3, no mention of arrythmias as a pediatric
side effect.

My question is does anyone know any references regarding use of proton
inhibitors during lactation. Normally I am fairly permissive with drugs, but
the word FATAL did give me pause, even though I know they are speaking in
terms of given the drug directly.

When I spoke to my pharmacist friend, he suggested not going for the latest
and greatest drug if the much more lactating friendly drug like prevacid
would do. He felt beta-blockers were a much better way to go for the
mother-baby pair. Now, the biggest hurdle is the gastroenterologist, who
refused to change the med just because the mom was nursing, even when the
mom's tests came back negative. I would like to follow up by letter giving
him specific info if it is available. Anyone care to comment.?

Thanks,
