Pat, No, I'm sorry that you misunderstood me. The baby's ability to take
adequate milk at the breast, ability to stay warm, and other MATURITY issues
is what I'm talking about. And with help and lots of mother's perserverence,
most of these babies can breastfeed. These mothers feel pretty bad
already--at my institution, babies are mostly(I won't say never) delivered on
the earlier side for a complication--twins or more, preterm labor, PIH,
bleeding. Never would I tell ANYONE that they'll be "fine" if they
bottlefeed formula--it's not in me to do that. I just can't encourage and
promote guilt in a mother whose baby isn't doing what all of the other babies
are doing. If they've chosen to get delivered early because of
convenience(not the baby's certainly), maybe they'll hear what I say about
the baby maybe not being as ready to come out until the due date for the next
time. You never know....
Having worked with many products of Harvard--not completely convinced
that it's that big of an advantage. Or that they were all breastfed.
