Hi Brenda
What a horror of a day! If it were me I'd be so angry, frustrated and
insulted. It is so aweful to be bullied by superiors for maintaining
profesional integrity.
Firstly, I would say that your superior's actions are grounds for complaint.
She has behaved unprofessionally. Name-calling is bullying and we don't
even condone it in school-yards anymore. Are there good greivance
procedures in your workplace? How would you feel about making a formal
complaint?
Secondly others are right about the IBCLE Code of Ethics. The Board won't
sanction LCs for attending formula promotions but I am not sure that that
helps you. You don't want to go. Your professional integrity tells you
that it is unethical for you to allow yourself to be associated with these
companies and you are looking for support from your professional body. If
the IBLCE took a stronger stance on this, you could say, 'I am sorry but if
I do as you ask, I'll be disiciplined by my professional association.
Furthermore the Board will not allow anyone else to fill this position if it
becomes vacant and you insist that attending these events is compulsory.'
But as it is you get no support from the very group that should go in to bat
for you.
Of course we don't want the Board to punish LCs for others' misdeeds but all
LCs who feel that it is unethical to attend such events need representation
and support from the Board. Would you consider writing to them and asking
them to consider pressuring employers/employer groups to cease requiring
that you compromise your professional integrity? Would others consider
doing likewise? After all the theme of this year's WBW would seem to call
on us to make a stand.
