Thank you to everyone who has replied to me about the need for different
kinds of peer groups and breastfeeding support groups. The posts have
clarified several points for me, particularly in regards to the training
that "peer" counsellors have. I guess my definition of "peer" was
limited, and I thought the groups were like the parenting or other peer
groups I was trained to facilitate after two hours or at most eight
hours of training. That was why I was worried about misinformation,
particularly when the groups follow a popular current model of
encouraging everyone to share his/her ideas on any topic, and where
everyone is equally correct (whether the person is advocating spanking
as an appropriate means of discipline or explaining how to tune into a
child's needs, whether insisting on unreasonable feeding schedules or
describing the benefits of cue-feeding, etc.). Perhaps we need some new
vocabulary here, to distinguish among the various types of support
groups available.
