I think it's misleading to say when something 'needs' happen or what
'sufficient' is. Experience and observation tells us that many
babies do not fit either of those patterns and are fine....it's
unusual when a baby does not regain birthweight in the first weeks,
but it is a sign that things can be looked more closely to see if bf
is effective or if there is anything going on with the baby that
makes this unusual thing happen. Often there is, and often it can be
fixed. Sometimes, all is well.

This baby appeared to gain nothing between week one and week 2....so
that woud be unusual. But there was a weight gain over the next two
weeks,

But that's just a snapshot.....

I have done some calculatuions. On the UK-WHO charts this baby was
born on the 9th centile. At six weeks, the 9th centile shows a
weight of 3800 g, and though the marks on the chart I am looking are
not there for five weeks, my reading of the curve would say a 9th
centile baby would weigh 3700 g...which is what this baby is
weighing. If this baby gains 100 g between week 5 and 6, she will
still be on track.

So if all the weights are accurate, this looks like a baby born on
the 9th centile, who is still on the 9 th centile.

If there are still concerns, then maybe the baby could be offered
more bf at night. But it looks like this baby and the ped could
benefit from charting the weight, for reassurance.
