Today's frustration:

Last night I received a call from a mom who is not my client, but had heard
of me via the hospital. It seems that the baby, born about 10 days ago, had
not had any stools since Saturday (3 days). (Red flag! red flag!!). They
called their pediatrician
who is out of town for the holidays. Referred to the hospital neonatologist
(tiny hospital; he also has a pediatric practice). His advice: "Give a
glycerin suppository. If that doesn't work, give another one 2 hours later.
If you are still having trouble, give the baby colace, twice a day." They
called me for a second opinion. I suggested they may want to come in for a
bf evaluation.....

When, WHEN, W-H-E-N will the "learned" learn that a 10 day old bf baby who
does not stool is NOT constipated? Does not need laxatives, suppositories,
prune juice, or.... but DOES need to be evaluated r/t bf????

And yesterday was the baby who's mom had Stadol & an epidural in labor, and
baby had not latched on by the time I got there (14 hours later) -- no
rooting, no feeding cues -- just a blank stare. Received one bottle of
formula in the nursery at 2 am -- I got there at 8 am. Mom had attempted bf
4 times to no avail. We worked off & on at baby's pace for well over an
hour; finally had a good feed on one side, but couldn't get punkin organized
enough to take the second side, though by this time she had figured out she
needed to open her mouth. Oh well, at least she's a girl....maybe there's
hope....

And then the mom yesterday afternoon -- we finally got the baby latched on
and bf well for 20 minutes with the SNS (4 days using a bottle & expressing
milk); all are rejoicing -- and mom says, "I think I'd rather not bf until
I'm able to get the pump setting up to maximum. I"m not so sure about bf."

Jan Barger, in Wheaton, where she's not real fond of Stadol, inverted
nipples, and certain pediatricians (present company excepted, of course,
Jack!!). Working at Barnes & Noble is looking better than ever this week....

Have a happy Thanksgiving to all my American compatriots!
