shields can be a crutch or can become a prosthetic.  That's the first thing 
that cam to  mind.  Then there are the variables.....  FT infant? 
Gravida/Para? Day shield begun?  Why?  Mom also pumping?  I'm sure you can 
all help  think up some more variables.  This is just off the top of my head 
this am.  I agree someone needs to do a decent study.  Most of the studies I 
am aware of come from Meier and her work with premies.  Makes me want to ask 
Diane Spatz at CHOP how often they use shields...will let you  know what she 
says.

I mentioned to my daughter (her hosp  had a baby given a shield come in FTT 
this week )  that when I was a hosp LC  (25+ years ago)I kept shields locked 
in my locker, so they couldn't be handed out like candy.  It's been a long 
time since those days, but I don't remember giving out many at all. That was 
before the days of self latch and laid back, which helps everyone concerned
