When my grandson was born prematurely, as soon as he was whisked away to the
nursery I asked the nurse for a small, sterile container and taught my
daughter-in-law to hand-express. I reminded her that if Sebastian had been
full-term, he would have been at the breast at this time, and we wanted to
duplicate that as much as possible. She was able to get a surprising amount
of milk.

It was a good thing, too, because when we hurried down to the nursery a few
minutes later, the nurse told us that they were going to have to give
Sebastian some formula because "he was probably hypoglycemic." My
daughter-in-law proudly whipped out the container of colostrum she had just
expressed and said "we don't need formula, he can have my milk."

Sebastian never did have any formula and is still happily nursing today at 2
years, 7 months.
