We have ample evidence that breastmilk alone is insufficient for optimal
(definition here the problem) growth in the tiniest infants (<1500 gm). I do
not want to see the osteoporosis, rickets poor weight gain, and slow head
growth come back. I wish we had something better to add, like human milk
powder, to fulfill our tiniest infant's needs. Although I am a
Neonatologist, I do not pretend to be on the cutting edge of preterm
nutrition research. I'm sorry Jack, but I don't believe you have those
credentials either. Rich Schanler (the author of the last premie paper
eveyone is quoting) does have the credentials, research background and common
sense to figure this out for us. He also has a strong committment to
breastmilk and breastfeeding. He is the incoming president of the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine.
Nancy Wight MD, FAAP, IBCLC
Neonatologist
