Thanks for your input Cathy.... This babe has had every test known on her
stool and several repeated this week, all negative for infection. She did
have normal breathing pauses and did not appear stressed at breast once she
achieved latch except when mom was doing breast compression during the MER
and she relaxed as soon as mom stopped. Thinking about it now I am
wondering if mom had been doing the compressions to initate MER? Baby
'chewed' at nipple (with shield) until MER then began active sucking---so
perhaps intuitively mom was helping get that MER for her. She really
didn't display signs of overactive MER or supply...other than green mucousy
stools. I am really thinking tt being the primary issue at this time, time
will tell re: dairy/soy issues. Mom all ready to see one of the docs I
refer to until she saw local MD who told her that tt is just a fad and she
(the MD) didn't see anything wrong---arrgh. Of course she didn't spend 90
minutes with them watching a feeding either! I hope with some encouragement
she will at least seek a 2nd opinion.
Thanks,
Michele

It often takes several weeks for the gut to fully heal after gi bleeding
in infants. Arvola and colleagues found that only about a third of the
babies they studied had cow milk allergy, the rest had various gi
infections, and all bleeding stopped within a month. It did recurr a few
times before stopping. We do think that overfeeding can cause gut
irritation as well. If the baby is gaining well over 8 oz per week,
reducing the milk production can help. If there is a lot of blood loss,
then of course GI follow up would be a good thing. If it's only streaks
and only on some days or some stools, then mom can probably watch and
see how the baby heals on her only human milk diet.

BTW, what did you notice about the baby's suck:swallow ratio and sucking
burst length? Did she take normal respiratory pauses after every 10-30
sucks?
