I've been reading the exchange about how to "market" breastfeeding with
considerable interest. We need to go to the people with REAL influence.
This includes the advice columnists. "HELP ME, HARLAN" IS growing in
popularity with teens and young adults (I read him weekly in the Dallas
Morning News, and also saw him in the paper we got in California last year).
He doesn't update his website very frequently, but eventually the letter
from and responses to "Small-Chested" should show up:

http://www.helpmeharlan.com/index.html

I'm turning cartwheels today -- my response wasn't printed, but one from
"Betty in Washington" was, pointing out that 1)breasts are for feeding
babies, not filling out sweaters 2) breastfeeding is "the best thing around"
3)breast surgery can interfere with breastfeeding and 4)breasts increase in
size during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you're on Lactnet, Betty,
BRAVA!

Harlan includes another letter, about the disadvantages of large breasts,
mentions there were many letters from "smaller-breasted women and
small-chest-adoring men", and concludes, "...there doesn't seem to be any
good reason for 'Small-Chested' to get breast implants."

Shouldn't Harlan Cohen get some kind of award for being the first (is he?)
to address this issue? He's well known for his promotion of common sense in
such things as relationships and sexually transmitted diseases... He's
founder of "Rejection Awareness Week"... Seems he's already treading that
psychosocial tightrope so many of us spend so much time on, holding the hand
of people who are starting to form their adult behavior patterns -- and he
doesn't shy away from including what breasts are for! From what I've seen
of his web site, he would probably have a great sense of humor about
displaying his award, and the awarding breastfeeding promotion organization
would get good publicity.
