The mucousy, bloody, foul-smelling stool is a tip off to the C. diff bacteria.  The mucus is quite noticeable in newborn's stool that have this problem.  I would describe the odor of the stool as very sharp or acrid- something like vinegar.  The NICU that I worked in many years ago had an outbreak.  These babies developed a pseudo-membranous colitis and needed treatment.  C. diff can also be a GI pathogen in adults.
