Adding calories to baby's diet has been suggested and I would like to add
to that suggestion that fats be added. There have been several informative
posts to Lactnet in years past about the value of assuring that a baby who
begins solids have foods with fats. Most mothers who begin baby foods are
giving the baby "diet food" as in fruits, veggies, rice, etc with no added
fats. The solids are replacing human milk, with the proper fats, with foods
low in fat.

It is common for these babies to lose or not gain weight. I get a couple of
calls a month about babies who started solid foods and stopped gaining
weight. When some fats are added baby resumes gaining weight.

Along with Darillyn's suggestion of table foods, I suggest adding some
quality olive oil to everything that baby eats. I have had good outcomes
with my clients following this plan. I usually have them add 1/4 teaspoon a
couple of times a day.

She could try the "More Milk Two" from Motherlove Herbal Company to see if
her milk supply will increase. If there is a concern about calcium in the
baby's diet, she could focus of ca-rich foods. There are ca-rich foods
other than dairy. Or she could check on a calcium supplement to add to
baby's foods. There are books available that have nutritional requirements
for infants and children and food sources of nutrients.

Of course this baby might be working off her fats in new-found mobility. My
second baby did not gain any weight for a couple of months and the doctor
was concerned until I told him that she had begun crawling and pulling up
on everything. His reply, "It doesn't sound as if she is malnourished, does
it?"

This mother sounds as if she is worried about the health of her baby and
will possibly not hear that other babies have stopped gaining weight at
some age or other. Adding fats and perhaps calcium might put her at ease.
