Marsha said, among a lot of other very good things:

There is absolutely no data to support that these supplements have any long
term benefit for the infant. All I see is a long term benefit in profits.

I read the ad for Expecta Lipil (A DHA supplement from MJ containing Martek
DHA).

Here is some of what was said: "Unfortunately, American women typically
consume less than 100 mg/day of DHA, far below an expert panel recommendation of
300 mg/day for pregnant and nursing women." Note at the bottom in very
small print states that "A daily value for dietary DHA has not been established."
Then, of course, it goes on to tout the importance of "helping moms bridge
the gap and provide recommended levels of DHA...."

Now, does one suppose that the "expert panel" is made up of Mead Johnson
nutritionists and share-holders? Do you suppose that quite possibly it is not
an unbiased panel?

There are NO studies that show that even increasing DHA in mother's milk
will increase the congnitive ability in their babies. No one knows how much DHA
in the milk has an effect. Babies are amazing resiliant, and despite
perceived deficiencies in breastmilk, seem to do rather well. Since no one knows
how much we need, it's quite possible that the amount that a mother has in her
milk is just what is needed for babies. Even if it is less than a mom in
Norway or Japan.

The other small print at the bottom: "These statements have not been
evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or
prevent any disease."
