Hello everyone! I am back on Lactnet - so if you have any questions about
breastfeeding and the law, don't hesitate to ask me! So nice to see so many
of you that I know on here - keep up the good work!

I was glad to hear that Inside Edition ran again. This was its second run,
and I doubt that it had anything to do with the Dateline show coming up! I
worked very closely with them on this, and I was the one that found them
each of the people on the show, and gave them the breastfeeding information
that they presented. It was a very rewarding experience - I love doing
this! I have often 'framed' the show for the people - after all, if they
are not given the right information, and the right people, how else are
they going to present it properly!

What pleased me so much was how each mother who was asked "if you child
breastfed till ten, would that have been OK with you?" and all answered
along the lines of "Yes! It was OK for my child to wean whenever he was
ready - regardless of how old he is!" Note that both divorce moms were
people that I helped. And yes, if a mother is breastfeeding an older child
and in a divorce situation, often it is best if she weans. Not what I would
recommend if a judge were not looking over her shoulder (children should be
allowed to wean when they want, regardless of how old they are), but in
family court, we are dealing with mainstream society, and it is just not
worth it to take a chance on a judge thinking that the mother is doing
something improper. Note that "Judy" in the show was one of the few mothers
who made good law - her case went on appeal, and the court ruled that
breastfeeding past age three was not developmentally inappropriate, despite
the father's witnesses to the contrary! This is a reported decision, and
can be used in other cases.

Any of you that are contacted by the press for ANY reason, don't hesitate
to call me and discuss it with me BEFORE you talk to them. There are many
pitfalls that can come about from not being prepared. And even if you are
very experienced and have done it many times, remember that 5 or 10 minutes
with me may help you to focus even better on the issues.

The same applies to any family law situation - I love these cases, and
don't mind hearing from anyone on it.
