Dear Lactnetters, I would like to check with your experience and wisdom
regarding a mother who feels that she is not producing enough milk. This
is her 5th child. She nursed the other 4 all for more than a year.
She is 41. This baby is the only girl and is 2 weeks old. The mother
feels that her milk production is not increasing with the growth of her
baby in spite of nursing the baby when she wants and for long periods at
the breast each time -- 20 minutes or more. The question the mother asked
was if milk production can decrease in relation to the mothers age
independent of other factors. Is there clinical reporting or research
related to this???

When I spoke to her more, I learned the child who would have been number 4
died less than a year ago at the age of 2 1/2 from a virulent virus.
I raised the possibility with the mother than her body may be responding to
feelings she has in relation to loosing her child and which affect how she
responds now to this baby. She is not consciously aware of feeling fearful
or other feelings. She feels she has dealt with the feelings. I suggested
that she get some support for herself, perhaps even with some body work
with Shiatsu or Reiki.

I woould be interested in advice, you can email me privately.
thanks. Donna Ron, MHA, IBCLC, LLL
