Hi All
I agree, we did have breastfeeding issues in the late 70s:
* timed feeds - 3 x3, 5x5, 7x7, 10 x10 and fourth hourly schedule or
third hourly schedule if small
* everyone was expressed after feeds
* babies spent the day in the nursery only coming out for feeds
* night feeds were practically non existent
* glucose water was offered after feeds till the milk came in
* test weighs were a norm on day 3 and the babies went backif they did
not get enough
* consent for formula - ???
* pooled breast milk especially for the prems

This was in the unit I did my midwifery in before I had my son.

No latch problems in the good old days??
I think we called this "nipple confusion" - I swear I've never seen
nipple
confusion (I agree with Kittie Frantz that babies are smart and can
adapt
themselves....) but my little non-latchers are usually late
pretermers.
We are still doing natural childbirths (our epidural rate went DOWN
last
year).
I do see a lot of tongue ties - and the parents have them too.

....who must've thought of this while I was sleeping last night as it
was
the first thing I thought of this morning!
