I just got off the phone with an anxious mom who has a toddler going in
for surgery. She has been told:

6 hours no food, no breastmilk for a child past a year

4 hours no breastmilk for a child younger than a year

2 hours clear liquid and breastmilk is *not* a clear liquid

The nurse the mom spoke with said that there is some new research that
creates the distinction between the 12mo+ and <12mo milk. I'm guessing
it's the stuff on the fat content of toddler milk, but seriously
misapplied by someone who doesn't know how much fat content can change
over the course of a feeding or a day.

Mom knows what is correct, but is very fearful to go against what she
is told, because she has lost one child who died during surgery, and if
it happens again (God forbid) it will be important that she followed
their rules (first child lost to gross medical error, nothing to do
with mom).

Is there anything out there dealing with anesthesia for bf toddlers?
Does this mom have any recourse in print, besides what is already (or
certainly ought to be!) common knowledge?
