While I have heard this analogy many times, the best approach was
one I heard recently from a representative of one of the pump
companies who was relating his experience in talking to an exectuive
about corporate lactation programs. The executive asked why such a
program would be needed, couldn't the moms just pump in the
bathroom? They had a comfortable couch there as well as an electric
outlet, so why set up anything else? The rep then asked if the exec
had ever brought a lunch from home. "Yes." " Did your wife fix it
for you?" "Yes." "Where did she fix it?" "In the kitchen of
course." At this point the rep said, "Tomorrow I'd like you to ask
her to take the fixings into your bathroom and fix and pack your
lunch there." The exec was, of course, incredulous at this
suggestion. The rep pointed out that that was exactly what he was
suggesting the moms do-fix their baby's next day lunch in the
bathroom. The exec was immediately interested in hearing more
stating "I never thought of it that way."
I have often responded to the idea of pumping or nursing in the
bathroom wiht "You wouldn't eat there would you?", but I think this
twist really made a more effective impression.
