A mom asked me to see her 41/2 month old breastfed infant for what she
thought may be thrush. I confirmed the thrush & she chose to use gentian
violet as per Dr. Jack's handouts. She used it previously for nipple
thrush with success. Following day, saw FP who told her it was "milk
burn from a strong suck" & should not be using the gentian violet. I
took Dr Jack's handout to Dr's office & discussed with office nurse as
physician was not in. Thrush became worse, returned to FP who dx thrush
& milk burn & offered to write Rx. When she told him that she would use
gentian violet, he told her to use it 4x's/day. Mother informed him that
she would use it once/day as per handout.
What is milk burn? Not found in archives.
I am looking at ways that I could have handled this situation better. My
plan is to take a copy of Dr Jack's handouts to the physicians in this
rural community & try to build a working relationship in terms of our
individual roles with breastfeeding moms. Your input would be
appreciated.
