Alicia writes, about the arguments against including not bf as a risk factor
for SIDS:
>I've heard and read a few arguments: (1) If a mother believes that her bb
>will not die from SIDS if she bf, and the baby *does* die despite being
>bf, this will increase her despair and helplessness and increase her
>anger; (2) If a mother chooses not to bf or is otherwise unable to bf,
>and her abm-fed bb dies, she will feel unnecessarily guilty;

So, to take this argument a little further: A mother stops smoking and her
baby dies of SIDS anyway, or she chooses to continue to smoke and her baby
dies of SIDS. She might feel angry or guilty, so smoking as a risk factor
probably should come out of that list? Isn't health promotion ABOUT guilt
production (OK, OK, I admit it's also about information)? This makes me
crazy!! Kathy D.--how about trotting out some of those car seat use ads that
you played us in Winnipeg and send them south? Now THOSE were
guilt-producing; just letting mothers know that they may be reducing the
risk of SIDS by bf, is NOT, in IMO.
