Mary White, one of the founding mothers of LLLI, began a talk at a
Wisconsin conference once with, "Breastfeeding is not enough." She went on
to talk about all of the knowings and learnings that a human person
encounters in her/his young life. She also shared her ideas about how
mothers continue to guide their children toward all aspects of humanness.

Every daily, hourly interaction of the little human person has an impact on
how she sees herself and, consequently, others. The paths to criminality
are varied. Of course, a loving mother whose infant is breastfeeding cannot
control her child's life experiences (though many of us would like to) nor
the way her child will interpret those experiences. But I think that all of
us believe that breastfeeding makes some healthy human beginnings more
assured. It probably takes a lot of abuses of the heart to create a
terriorist or a murderer and some people do live with such abuses daily.

I used to tell my LLL groups when discussions drifted to "guarantees of
good outcomes" that Atilla the Hun was probably breastfed as were many
other people who didn't seem to learn how to be a human being. But feeding
at Mother's breast has a good chance of setting a good foundation upon
which to build healthy character. We must then remain conscientious about
the learnings that our children are internalizing.
