As I understand it the first formulas to be made were even more
complicated. Mothers had to visit their doctors every few weeks to
have the formula adjusted to the needs of their particular baby. This
was, in fact, touted by the formula companies as a way for doctors to
increase their income.

Of course I am not implying that present-day formula companies would
stoop to such tactics.
