It is possible that the baby's bacteria (in nose and mouth) MAY have been
the cause of her recurrent mastitis. But this would usually be
Staphylococcus aureus ("staph"), not an organism from the stomach. 20-25% of
the population carries staph in their nose.
I am currently conducting a study to investigate if nasal S. aureus (mother
and baby)plays a role in mastitis. I was hoping to present the results at
the ILCA conference, but recruitment is slower than expected (isn't it
always?), so it won't be finished - but it should still be an interesting
presentation.

PS. Look out for the cover of Acta Paediatrica (March) as I took the photo
of a just-born baby on the breast! Please - no comments about the
attachment! I was just called in to the birth centre as the photographer. (I
did ask the young mother how it felt and she kept saying fine). It is
accompanying an article about intention to breastfeed and outcomes.
