Cum laude and other 'latin honors' are given for good grades. In 
science, departmental honors is more equivalent to the 
British/Australian/Canadian system of honours. In my (biology) 
departmental honors program, we did a year of research, wrote a thesis, 
and defended it orally. We have no external designation on our degree 
for having departmental honors though. I have it on my cv, but I don't 
know if anyone knows what it means who hasn't done a similar program...
