As I mentioned in my intro, I was teaching classes for my local WIC office
as a peer counselor. We had a terrible time getting moms to show up, the
most attendees I'd had was 4, often no one would show up. You can imagine
this is pretty discouraging to me as a volunteer. The only women directly
contacted about the classes were those who had already expressed an
interest when filling out a breastfeeding questionaire at their
certification. We also placed signs with dates and times in all of the
offices. I'm curious for any other ideas on increasing class attendance
from other WIC personnel or anyone for that matter. Did you use an
incentive of some sort, if so what? We considered offering manual pumps
for attending, but decided that wasn't a good idea. My supervisor said we
can't withhold checks - require attendance. Our ever breastfed rate is
only 47% I believe, so we could really use alot of work.
