Hi Joedi,

Our unit warms milk (in capped syringe) or a bottle in an individual cup of
warm water. (The caps are from the pharmacy, the little beige ones used for
PO meds). One labled cup per 24 hours per baby or PRN. For infants still
in an Isolette, you can place it inside the isolette,at the end of the bed
(if milk is already thawed). It usually warms well in about 10 min.
depending on the ISC temp control. Our syringe pumps alarm at 10 min. prior
to completion of feeding. This is a good time to place new syringe in
isolette or warm water for the next feeding.

Subject: warming milk in the NICU

I have a quick question for those of you who work in NICUs. How does your
unit warm breast milk that is in a syringe, that will be fed over a pump,
or by straight gavage? Do you warm it or not? Do you warm it in a
separate bottle/container, or in the syringe? We are just looking for
better practices.
Thanks,
Joedi Mailloux BSN, RNC, IBCLC
