Hi, My name is Renee. I am an RN and I work in a prenatal program here in
northern California. I was a member of the list quite a few moons ago, and
have decided to get back to my favorite group of lactation professionals. (I
missed you !!)

Anyway, wanted to share my first real "success story" in my new position. I
have been able to help all of my clients thus far to breastfeed, with 5 of the 6
continuing to breastfeed up to this point (my oldest is now 6 mos old and still
going strong....after 2 previously bottle fed babies that mom was disappointed
about (same old story...NO support). The one that isn't still nursing, still had
a full 3 weeks of breast milk, mom just decided she didn't "like" it. BUT my
super success came in the form of a 16 yr old first time mother. She gives full
permission to post. She gave birth (completely unmedicated labor and delivery
which I attended) on Thursday. Baby was skin to skin the entire first hour and
latched well ALL BY HERSELF!! Mom is ecstatic and I will be visiting her today
(Sunday) to assess that all is well. I am so proud of this young girl and her
boyfriend. They are both commited and considering their ages, I only wish I
had some 20 and 30 somethings as commited to providing her own milk to their
baby.

I have been raising some eyebrows at work with my breastfeeding "gung-ho"
attitude. I am working very hard to have breastfeeding seen as normal and
ABM seen as just that...artificial. I have met with resistance with a few co-
workers, but the vast majority seem very supportive. I will be posting more
later asking for assistance in helping the resistant ones to feel more
comfortable with it. I look forward to your advice and support :)

My goodness....it feels sooo good to be back.

Renee Drake RN CLC
