Rachel I don't work in the hospital situation any more, however when I
did I would put both mother and newborn baby into the bath together to,
hopefully, encourage latching when there was a problem. I think now that
perhaps the reason it may have worked was more because of the position
the mother and baby are in - mother reclining baby supported on her
chest, a la work done by Suzanne Colson, Christian Smillie and Rebecca
Glover.

Anyway ... we often (read very, very frequently) use sitz baths (salty
water baths) for mothers with episiotomies to sit in, and here in
Australia babies are submerged (to the neck only!) when being bathed -
right from soon after birth. Cord care is just clean water and dry
carefully.
