Whether mom continues to breastfeed or weans, she still goes home to an
active 11 month old and so she will may need household help-mother's helper
available--amount and length of time needed depends on her condition. She
probably will face a baby, who because of the separation, either clings (and
wants to climb all over mom) and wants to nurse more than ever or who ignores
mom and breast (at least at first). Breastfeeding actually may be the easiest
thing to help both mom and baby through the recovery and separation effects.
Mom just may have to get creative with positioning. Is she/has she had the
baby brought in for visitation in the hospital? Having baby brought in may
diminish later overenthusiasm on the part of the baby, since the separation
won't have been quite so complete. But I'd emphasize to mom that weaning will
not solve the problem of dealing with an active 11 month old--rather it may
exacerbate it.

There is lots to say on decreasing number of pumpings, cold or cabbage
compresses, etc, if she chooses to wean. Don't think necessary here. Hope
this helps.
