Hi all,

I ahve checked the archives about engorgement and will pass on some
suggestions but does anyone have any further thoughts on severe engorgement
and do some women always seem to experience it even with the remedies this
mum has done? I have permission to share her story and she welcomes any
suggestions (e-mail responses to me). Note: the hypermastia she refers to
is not accessory nipples, but the severe engorgement she describes.

<<Thank you for responding to my e-mail regarding hypermastia. This is my
third pregnancy, and I am a little worried due to the severe engorgement
which occurred after both my first, and most especially my second child.
Although we attempted to breast fed, she would not latch on properly, we
were informed by a lactation consultant that she had "tonic bite", although
we tried and tried, (I was told that breasfeading would actually help the
engorgement) she would not latch on properly, and we gave up. I managed to
breast fed my first child, even though I had severe engorgement, the
breastfeeding seemed to help somewhat.

What happens, is that my breast get SEVERELY engorged (two footballs, and
just as hard! - when I am normally a B cup) approximately 24 hours after
giving birth, and lasts for at least one week. I have a midwife for the
delivery of my children in the hospital, and I feel that her assistance has
helped. We apply cabbage leaves every few hours to my breasts, soak them
in warm water and pump and breast fed as often as I can. I also get lumps
under my armpits the size of golf balls. Its not a pleasant experience
that I am looking forward to repeat. We hope to be able to breast fed this
child, as I believe it much healthier for both baby and me, and will also
help me with my condition. Very few physicians seem to know much about
this condition, my midwife hopes to get more information on it as well, and
we will try to get more info. from a doctor at sick kids in Toronto.

If you happen to have any more information on how to "reduce" the symptoms
of this condition, or any other info. I would very much appreciate to hear
from you.>>
