Yes, Pat, I agree and tell families that usually the baby will lose a
few ounces from birthwt to discharge wt, but they should start gaining
during the first week. This coincides, I think, with the milk coming in.
So I tell families to watch for these things to happen by about day 4 or
5:
milk comes in
increase pees and poops (give them the nos.)
poops become yellow seedy
wt gain starting to occur

I do not think it is the usual thing or even the normal thing for baby
to take 2 wks to be back to b.w. (of course this may occur and the baby
be perfectly normal). And in my area babies are seen by pedi at hospt
d/c and again at 2 wks old. I don't like this. If the LCs werent
follwoing them I think some would get into trouble. So we educate them
and call all of them on day 3 and follow as long as needed and bring
them in if signs of trouble.
