Hello all,

Angela anwers the question about a ten year old pump. She has objections to
the question. So do I, but partly for different reasons.
Manufacturers will always say that people should buy new stuff. That's their
business. They also say you cannot buy a secondhand pump due to risk of
thrush.
If that were really true, then any mother having had an episode of thrush,
would have to buy a new pump... for herself! I think the risks M. talks
about are partly theoretical.
What I think we as IBCLC's should do, is add our own info to the
instructions of the manufacturer a mother could read for herself.
Almost any mom can do an internet search herself nowadays. We don't need to
do that *for* her; we ought to respect and promote her autonomy and explain
to her how she can do it herself.
This leads me to my objections to the question: I don't think we should let
ourselves be used as vehicles to find people that a mom can sell her stuff
to.
That is *not* our role. We can tell her what the risk of selling an old pump
can be for the buyer and we should leave it at that.
I think this is a matter of informed decision making: inform, inform,
inform. We are not there to be intermediaries for mothers who want to sell
stuff to others.
What other hcp would lend her- or himself to do that...? If we want to
strengthen our profession, I think we should stay away from actions like
these...

Kindly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands

Subject: [LACTNET] 10 yr old pump n style

I have a very simplistic response to the question...

I have a request from a mom who wants to re-purpose/pass along her 10
year old Medela Pump In Style Pump. She says it still works fine but has
no one to give it to. She wondered if I could find someone who could use
it. Is there a way to re-purpose it or would you recommend it to a mom
at all if it is 10 years old? I told her I would ask around...this is
how I'm asking around.

Absolutely NOT! I apologize for my next statement but I am going to
make it anyway. I am disappointed that someone with credentials of
IBCLC would ask that question. There is a formal tear sheet that Medela
has that will address and you can copy from the Medela website.
