Re : Promethazine with codeine (Phenergan with codeine)

Phenergan expectorant with codeine is a common product and I see no problems if
a breastfeeding mother needs it. First, promethazine is a very safe
antihistamine commonly used for nausea, vomiting, but also as an antihistamine
for allerigic problems. Whereas the normal dose is about 25-50 mg for an
adult, this product only has 6 mg per teaspoonful, hardly enough to be worth
taking. Phenergan suppositories are sometimes used in pediatric patients for
Nausea and vomiting, but not often.

The most important ingredient in this product is the Codeine. Codeine is a
wonderful antitussive (anti cough). This product contains 10mg codeine per
teaspoonful which is about right to significantly reduce nighttime cough.
Apparently the cough reflex is much more sensitive to codeine than pain. The
normal PO dose for codeine as an analgesic is about 30-60 mg every 4 hours.

So as you can see, the doses in this product are really very low, and the
products are quite safe for breastfeeding mothers.
