I have an acquaintance with a severe latex allergy and she cannot wear
any mainstream bras or underwear because of it. During bf (which
coincidentally was just about when she was discovering her allergy) she
had the same sensations (extremely sore and sensitive nipples and
burning breasts) that was finally tracked down to the bra because when
she removed her bra there was a perfect outline of the contact rash from
it.

She has been able to find some latex-free bras but its been a
significant challenge for her. Any way this mom could go bra-less in
the meantime?

Subject: Latex and bras?

I just did a search of Lactnet, and didn't find any reference to this
situation, so now I'm asking:

A mom has been calling me to discuss horribly sore nipples and burning
breasts (my hat, in the beginning, was as a friend, as she is a
long-time member of our La Leche League group and this is her 4th baby,
and as I am in Public Health, I don't see private patients when there
are other IBCLCs in Private Practice in the area moms can see). She
first reported to me she had thrush for which she had taken Nystatin,
used Gentian Violet, used APNO, then taken Diflucanthen with little
improvement. She contacted a Lactation Center where she was told to
consider she may have Reynaud's (she has migraines regularly)so now is
on Nifedipine.

However, the more we talked the more she became convinced there was
something else going on. She is highly allergic to latex - breaks out
badly if touched with a latex glove, etc. She discovered that all her
bras had spandex and wondered if this could be the cause of the burning
she was feeling in her breasts. She is finding some improvement now
that she no longer uses them, but still has sore nipples.

I did see her as an IBCLC last Friday as her baby is not gaining,
stooling every 6 - 8 days - and she was desperate. I observed an
overactive milk ejection reflex (baby took 2.5 ounces in less than 4
minutes). Baby has a palate that is an upside-down V and a VERY strong
gag reflex. During the feeding a lot of clicking is heard, and when the
nipple comes out of the mouth it is flattened in a VERTICAL not a
horizontal direction, following the V of the hard palate.

We are working on "fixing the breastfeeding" with positioning, etc.
However, I was wondering if any of you have had a mom with this type of
reaction to their bra?
