Hello, my name is Julia Thompson I am a nursing student at Ivy Tech
Community College of Indianapolis.

In OB lecture my instructor mentioned milk banks, I had never heard of
breast milk banking until then. I decided I wanted to know more so I have
been researching milk banks. I understand from my research that this was
a rather popular concept in the past. In the mid 1980's with the advent
of AIDS there was an enormous decline in the number of milk banks in the
U.S.(IMMilkBank). They are making a comeback! I was pleasantly surprised
that we have one locally.

I understand there is an issue with supply of human breast milk in
comparison to the amount of possible demand (if there were no formula
companies). In order to be able to receive banked milk one must have a
physicians order. I found that "preemies" that weigh less than 2.2 lbs are
the most common users of banked milk (HMBANA).

Are you seeing banked milk being prescribed to infants in need?
Are mothers being made aware of this option? I obviously have not seen
this first hand, and would like to hear your input on this subject.

Thank you in advance for all of your input!
