Hi, Pam: I beg to respectfully disagree with you, but CLC means certified
lactation consultant. UCLA has used CLE (Certified Lactation Educator) and
CLC (Certified Lactation Consultant) designations since they offered their
first Lactation Training Program back in 1982. This is a master's level
certification course offered in 2 parts - the Lactation Educator Training
Program and the Lactation Consultant Training Program. Part 1 (educator)
is a pre-requisite for Part 2 (consultant). Part 2 also requires that the
participant hold a health care license (MD, RN, RD, PT, OT, SLP, etc.) as
the participant is seeing higher level problems and it is felt by the
faculty that the participant is then legally covered by their license's
practice act. Part 1 of the program certifies the participant to teach
breastfeeding and to manage routine non-complex breastfeeding issues. Part
2 certifies the participant to not only teach and manage routine brstfdg,
but to manage the more complex brstfdg issues. These programs are based on
the medical model (so helpful to understand if one is practicing in the
hospital or clinic setting) and have a strong oral-motor emphasis to them.
I maintain that even those of us who have been in practice for many years
would benefit greatly from the material covered in these courses. Oh, the
faculty is composed of breastfeeding professionals from a variety of
backgrounds - MD, RN, RD, PT, SLP, and LLLI. To further prove that one
does not have to have an RN background to be a successful breastfeeding
clinician.
