Maureen (honored prezzie of ILCA) said,

Dear Lactnet Colleagues,
The current situation of a formula company using ILCA's name on advertising
posters is being addressed by the ILCA Board of Directors. ILCA's policy on
using book reviews from the Journal of Human Lactation for commercial
advertising; is as follows and this is clearly stated in each journal on the
Reviews page.

"Any reviews, ratings, or reports appearing in this column are intended
solely for the use of our readers. These reviews, ratings, or reports may
not be used in advertising or for any other commercial purpose, unless prior
written consent is obtained from the International Lactation Consultant
Association. ILCA will take all available measures to prevent the
unauthorized commercial use of its materials, its name or the name of the
Journal of Human Lactation."

Thanks to Judith Campbell for bringing this to the direct attention of the
Board,

Please everyone, note that the JHL/ILCA "endorsement" of Kathleen's book
happened many years ago. It is on the front cover of her 1990 edition of The
Nursing Mother's Companion, and states: "Rated by the International Lactation
Consultant Association as the "best possible choice among breastfeeding guides."
That means that whenever this was done, it was either 1989 or very early
1990. The 1999 edition of the same book says on the back cover: "Recommended by
medical practitioners.....and by the Journal of Human Lactation."

So MJ is simply continuing to capitalize on something that was done nearly 15
years ago. Since the policy as it is stated now was not in effect at the
time MJ started using our faux pas, I think the best idea would be for the ILCA
Board to simply state to MJ what the CURRENT policy is, and ask them to cease &
desist. Whether or not they have to legally comply is anyone's guess since
they are simply continuing a practice that was started before the policy came
into effect.

In essence, I guess I'm saying that since the JHL that made the statement
does not have the policy Maureen quoted in it, whether that would give them their
legal leg, so to speak.

No question that they are weasels.....but let's be careful about calling this
particular issue black, when in fact it may be a "steal" grey.
