Aloha,

When I talk to moms about pumping, I do recommend that they not pump for the first 4 to 6 weeks. I think mom and baby need to establish the nursing relationship. However, this is when things are all fine and dandy. If baby is premature, or there is any kind of problem, etc., I mention that mom might need to pump during these times depending on their situation. I realized (through trial and error in my breastfeeding class) that I needed to really emphasize the possibility that they may need to pump in the the few weeks, or they do take what I have said about not pumping to mean--never pump for any reason.
So a mom may have misunderstood what she had been told about when to start pumping.

Aloha,
Gloria Thai--only only 8 more days till we arrive in Italy--yipee!
