Carolyn - my deep commiserations - you handled this so well. What you
described was almost beyond belief. But I can't help wondering about a wife
more afraid of her husband's anger than such awful pain. Or about about a
man who could inflict such pain on his wife and about a wife who would
submit to this. I would feel compelled to contact the other LC and find out
at first-hand what she actually recommended, having learned that sometimes
the other health professional did NOT say what the mother says she said!!
You did your best.

Barbara - thanks for explanation of nipple probe procedure. Had a client
three years ago who underwent two nipple probes to clear mastitis (under
general anaesthetic!) I'd never heard of this, and couldn't find anything
about it anywhere. The first time it was not successful. The second time a
tiny portion of the nipple (site of milk plugged at nipple pore) was
"shaved". It appeared to resolve the mastitis and mother went on to
breastfeed for another 16 months.
