Along with block feeding, you might have mom use a scissor hold just behind the areola and squeeze it off to decrease flow as soon as the let down starts.  This should help the baby handle the flow. I learned this technique just recently from one of my moms who had the same issue, it was the main thing that helped her baby be able to continue to nurse.   Let us know what you learn from blood tests.
