The worst part of vasospasm is that it creates fear. The mom thinks
something is really terribly wrong. Once you point out that it is rather
typical of previously traumatized tissue to be sensitive to thermal changes,
moms are very reassured. Conservative treatment is to continue to protect
against re-truamatization of the nipples, and to keep the nipples warm. A
clean cotton sock filled with un-cooked rice can be heated in a microwave.
It will hold heat a long while. After baby comes off the breast, immed.
cover the nipple so it doesn't get blasted with cold air. Put the hot rice
bag over the mom's shirt. The heat will relax the cramping blood vessels
and relax everything. The characteristic stinging should stop. Once mom
knows that it is annoying -- not dangerous-- she can handle the experience
better.
