Hello All. I have worked with one mom who donated partial kidney to her
nursling. I dont remember how long she was in the hospital but it was
more than just 1-3 days. She needed more time to recover for herself
than to be at bedside with her nursling that received the organ. She
was not able to maintain a 8time a day pumping schedule. The level of
narcotics and post op meds were too much of a risk for the infant so she
pumped and dumped while on the higher doses. In my opinion, yes, it was
physically demanding and lowered her supply. As someone already
mentioned, the surgery is longer and more involved than, say a
gallbladder removal, which would involve more fluids, more anesthesia,
possibly anticholinergics. She was able to go on and relactate once she
was feeling better and able to spend more time with the baby nursing in
addition to pumping but it was very difficult for her. My point is that
every mom will have her own level of recovery time, motiviation to
maintain lactation, pain etc. There should not be a MEDICAL reason she
must stop lactating but I do think it will bring challenges postop.
